Based on the analysis of the thesis defense since 2016, it can be seen that the students’ thesis has been written based on research conducted without paying attention to the minimum requirements (standards) of each type of research. Students may have referred to the Thesis and Dissertation Writing Guidelines published by Graduate School, but the information in the guidelines does not meet the detailed information needs for each type of research. It is proved by the students’ ability that meets the standards after being given feedback by the examiners. To ensure the students can produce a thesis that meets the standards, it is necessary to write a more detailed guideline as outlined in the Thesis Writing Standard Guidebook for English Education master students of Yogyakarta State University. The availability of the guidebook will help the students write a research proposal, carry out research, and report research results properly based on the standards. Thus, students will have better preparation so that the thesis writing process will be better.
